Mot angl. attesté dep. 1749 (NED), désignant un homme de condition sociale assez élevée vivant sur ses terres et y pratiquant l'agriculture, composé de gentleman et de farmer « cultivateur » (de l'a. fr. correspondant au fr. mod. fermier).
